ABOUT

ABOUT

Aou Roques gite  accommodates up to 3 people* and is located on the edge of the quiet village of Ju Belloc just outside  the town of Plaisance. It is one hour from the Pyrenees and two hours to the Atlantic coast with access through a number of airports, Tarbes/Lourdes, Toulouse, Bordeaux. There is  also rail access from Paris  and Bordeaux through Mont de Marzan  or Dax. The village is next to the River Adour which has a well marked pathway stretching from Aire sur l'Adour to Tarbes and a short way from two of the most famous wine growing villages of the region, Madiran and St Mont, with the famous Armagnac region a little further away. Apart from the wine and gastronomy of the region, the big attractions for us are the countryside with easy access to mountains, sea and rolling hills of Gers, the opportunities to practice a whole variety of sports such as skiing, cycling, hiking and horse riding and finally the numerous festivals and events which take place throughout the year with everything for music lovers from jazz to salsa, flamenco, big band and church organ, and gastronomic and wine events organised around the two great wine areas of  St Mont and Madiran+. Here at Aou Roques we try to do everything to  help visitors have a wonderful experience of the Heart of the South West (Coeur du Sud-Ouest), as the area between the Adour and Marciac is known .

* Note that the accommodation is unsuitable for people with disabilities.

+ We maintain an up-to-date calendar of the main events going on in the region

SEE & DO

SEE AND DO

Festivals and Atractions

Le Gers is famous for its many music festivals  everything from Classical in Plaisance', Jazz in Marciac to Latin in Vic Fezensac. Nogaro racetrack is very popular for car racing fans and there are also magic, crafts and sky and astronomy festivals. For more info look in our events calendar.

Cultural Sites

The region is rich in cultural heritage with one of the region’s most famous sons being the musketeer, d'Artagnon, born in nearby Lupiac and celebrated in an annual festival. There are many  Bastide towns such as Plaisance, as well as chateaux ,museums , ancient churches and other historic sites.

Wine and Food

We are close to several famous vineyards such as Chateau Montus , (Madiran), and Plaimont,  (St Mont).  The region  has achieved world renown for its foie gras sold everywhere.  For visitors wishing  to know more about Gascon cuisine we recommend  'Duck Season' by David McAninch.

Sports and Activities

There are many options for walkers, cyclists and horseback riders including the nearby Route de l'Adour,  and further away the high Pyrenees and  the coastal paths , such as the  Vélodyssée.  Canoeing, tennis and golf are also found nearby.

Fauna and Flora

Gers is a haven for fauna and flora . We get woodpeckers, hoopoes, red squirrels and much more in the garden and  there is a nature reserve within walking distance with  viewing hides. Further afield  are Gaves (Pyrenees) and Teich (Arcachon Bay).

Markets and Fairs

The many markets of  Gers come to life in summer when stalls are brimming with local produce. At other times festivals celebrating the wines, armagnac and produce of the region are frequent. More information can be found on  the Marciac tourism site.

REVIEWS

Pat and Julie Reeves

"We received a very warm welcome from Chris and Gill, who made us feel so comfortable and were always on hand for advice and ideas about the area.  We had complete privacy, peace and tranquility. Everything we needed was provided and we spent five weeks here whilst househunting, The area is so beautiful and there are so many places to visit - and the wine is outstanding.  We would recommend this lovely little gite for a couple who want to embrace the French way of life for a little while"
